How well do you know your skin?
No doubt we all use some form of skincare product; we moisturise, we take our makeup off, we exfoliate, but how much do we really know about our skin? Are we using the best products and targeting the right areas for us? Highstreet products often fail to target the root of our needs and provide short-lived results, not actually correcting or solving any of our skincare problems. Here at Pro Aesthetics Nottingham we champion professional skincare and think it’s so important to be aware of how our skin functions and what it needs. Here’s a handy cheat sheet on the layers of our skin and which parts of it we should definitely be looking after.
Collagen
Collagen is made by fibroblast cells and is what keeps a face looking young and firm by providing the skin with strength and structure. It is so vitally important to look after our collagen because we lose 1% a year after the age of 20! It breaks down because of natural factors like UV rays from the sun, but even the blue light from our computer screens takes its toll on collagen production and can age us prematurely as a result. Luckily, there are cosmetic procedures to increase collagen production like dermal filler, laser treatment, and microneedling.
Elastin
Elastin is the component responsible for elasticity, so when our elastin levels decrease our skin begins to sag and lose its firmness. After puberty, our skins begins to produce less and less elastin, so we really do need to start looking after it as soon as we can to preserve it! Elastin is formed via a very complicated biological procedure in the skin and so is extremely difficult to replicate in skincare, so the best thing to do is prevent elastin loss in the first place by using sun protection.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA for short) is a type of sugar that is naturally present and therefore naturally dissolvable in the skin. It has the ability to bind to and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water molecules, naturally plumping the skin and giving it volume. Hyaluronic acid is commonly used in cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers to give the skin a smoother and more plumped appearance. Popular areas for this plumping treatment are the cheeks and lips.
