Why your injector might say ‘no’
We don’t often find ourselves saying ‘no’ since we are blessed with the trust and respect of our clients (thank you, as always) but we are always prepared to deny a treatment should we need to. Your safety and happiness is our top concern, and we’ll tell you why.
The quick reasons your injector might say ‘no’ to your requests:
- You have unrealistic expectations
- You’re comparing yourself to someone else, or want to look like someone else
- You’re not getting the treatment for yourself
- You’re unsure yourself whether you want it
- There’s another treatment or approach that would be better for you
- You have pre-existing health conditions
- You’ve been told ‘no’ by other clinics, too
Saying ‘no’ for patient safety
The main and probably only reason your injector might say ‘no’ to your injectable treatments is for your own physical or psychological safety. First and foremost, our injectors are medical professionals and our main priority is always to ensure the safety and happiness of our clients and patients. If this means advising against a treatment for your own benefit, then we will do this with no hesitation.
Reason 1: You have unrealistic expectations
Your practitioner may say ‘no’ to you if you have unrealistic or heightened expectations that are beyond what we can achieve. For example, sometimes it takes a few appointments over the span of a few months to reach the final desired results. This is often the case with skin treatments like microneedling and chemical peels, but can also be the same for treatments such as lip fillers.
This is because these treatments have buildable results, and we prefer to see patients through a treatment journey rather than a sub-optimal quick fix.
For lip fillers, you may first need to add volume and consequently let the product and swelling settle before you come back 6-8 weeks later for a tweak to the borders. For microneedling, you’ll need a course of around 4-6 treatments to see long-lasting changes in your skin, since the treatment promotes collagen and skin cells remodeling.
Beautiful results take time, and to avoid disappointment by promising instant results that will change your life, we always caution our patients to be… well, patient.
Reason 2: You want to look like someone else
We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to medical aesthetics and beauty; everybody has a unique facial structure and everybody possesses a beauty that is truly their own. This is why we may caution patients against wanting to look like someone else be that a friend or a celebrity. We’ve written about this before and dubbed this the Love Island effect.
For example, if a client were to tell us that a member of our team had recently done some filler for one of their friends and they want the same, we’d welcome them in for a consultation. We would, however, evaluate their face and their suitability for any treatment they enquire about, not simply say ‘yes’ and perform the exact same treatment.
We use different injection techniques and approaches to achieve bespoke results for each individual. This means that one approach used on a friend or family member might not be the right approach for you.
It’s important to understand the limitations (and by ‘limitations’, we mean what is achievable with the facial structure you already possess) to certain treatments.
Reason 3: You’re not getting the treatment for yourself
This is a tricky one, and we’ll always do our best to handle this one sensitively…
If we interpret or you share that you’re getting a treatment to please your partner or because they want you to, then we may politely and quietly deny this. Medical aesthetics may not be surgical or require a scalpel, but they are still treatments and substances that require your knowing consent and bodily autonomy.
They’re a very personal journey as well as a physical treatment that is being performed on you. This is why we would only treat clients and patients who are able to completely consent to and understand the treatments they’re asking for.
Plus, we believe everyone has their own beauty as we said before, and we would hope that you can find yours with or without treatments, and only with those that you seek out for yourself.
Reason 4: You’re unsure whether you want it in the first place
This is a really simple one: if you’re unsure about the treatment and keep changing your mind, we might ask you to take some time to consider it properly!
This is purely for your own understand and satisfaction, because we would never pressure a patient into a treatment they were undecided on. Again, bodily autonomy is a huge cornerstone of medical aesthetics, so we would always ask that you give any treatments you’re unsure about some proper thought.
You can, of course, book a consultation and come to the clinic to talk to us about your concerns or hesitations and we can do our best to help you reach the right answer for you. We’d welcome this!
For treatments such as Botox injections, we usually enforce a 10-14 days ‘cooling off’ period after your first consultation to give you time to settle into the right answer for you.
Reason 5: There’s another treatment or approach that’s better for you
Now, this one isn’t a ‘no’ as much as it is a redirection.
Say, for example, you come to us and say you want cheek filler because your mid-face looks tired. We wouldn’t simply say ‘yes, hop on the bed!’ and perform the cheek filler.
We’d ask you questions about where specifically you’re concerned about, ask you to show us them in the mirror, ask you lifestyle and skincare questions. This may reveal that actually, the sagging skin on the mid-face is a result of lost volume under the eyes or even in the temples, which is causing the cheeks to appear sallow but is not caused by said cheeks.
There’s a balance between treating the affected area and treating the reason behind the affected area. We often make these recommendations when we understand your concerns but believe a different treatment or approach would yield you the results you want.
Reason 6: You have pre-existing medical conditions
We cannot perform Botox if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have neuromuscular disorders or weakened muscles (through conditions such as ALS)
- Have experienced an allergy to Botox; this is rare but not unheard of
- You are being prescribed or are currently taking a course of antibiotics
We cannot perform dermal fillers if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a skin infection
- Have experienced an allergy to dermal filler; this is rare but not unheard of
- You are being prescribed or are currently taking a course of antibiotics
- You are taking blood pressure medications or anticoagulants
Reason 7: You’ve been told ‘no’ elsewhere
If we believe or confirm that you have been told ‘no’ by other injectors before coming to us, we may turn you away also.
This is primarily out of concern for your safety, because if other clinics have assessed your questions and desired results and decided that it wouldn’t be safe to proceed with treatment, then we are unlikely to prove otherwise.
We firmly believe that only medical professionals should perform any and all aesthetic treatments, and if fellow qualified Doctors and Nurses have agreed it isn’t safe for you, then this is in your best interest!
We will always say ‘yes’ to a client or patient if the treatment is the correct choice for them; we love helping people feel happy and comfortable in who they are! But if there are concerns for your psychological or physical safety, we may ask you to reconsider.
Reasons we’ll say ‘yes’
- You have balanced expectations of your outcome and results
- You understand the aftercare advice
- You’re enquiring about a treatment for yourself
- You’re of sound mind and body
- You understand everything discussed at your consultation
